2009-11-19 New source for green bioenergyPolish Ministry of Economy broadens definition of biomass, which could be used for bioenergy production. Since October this year the raw materials could also include low quality grains, which are not suitable neither for consumption nor for pasture.
Because of sensibility of Polish agriculture to weather conditions (fungi infections) almost 10% of plant production in Poland does not show good enough quality for consumption. For example, according to the data of Polish Federation of Crops Producers out of almost 26millions tons of harvest this year only 6-7 millions were eatable by human, 12-14 millions were suitable for pasture, and the rest of 4-6millions tons constituted a waste.
Thus, utilization of the grain waste for generating energy seems to be fully reasonable. It will decrease costs of producing energy and solve the problem of storage and buying up of this material. However, Polish Institute for Renewable Energy have recently also raised an objection to application of grains for energy creation concerning environmental and ethical issues.
