2009-03-19 Poland: Jagiellonian Center for Experimental Therapeutics to set up in Krakow

Over 45 million grant from UE will receive a new Jagiellonian Center for Experimental Therapeutics - JCET. Within the project, Technical University in Lodz and the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences will set up a joint research center - a modern laboratory centre with equipment for specialist and interdisciplinary research of medicines. The first laboratories are planned to be open in autumn 2009. The project is funded within the framework of the Operational Program of Innovative Economy (2.2. action).

JCET will be consisted of a central laboratory located in the Life Science Technology Park in Krakow. Furthermore it will cooperate with laboratories from Technical University in Lodz and the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAN. That interdisciplinarity of research, integration of researchers from different disciplines is the foundation for the creation of such a center – said initiator of the project, prof. Stefan Chlopicki.

According to prof. Chlopicki as part of this project, a unique equipment will allow a comprehensive study assessing the impact of compounds on endothelium, progenitor endothelial cells, and vascular wall. Endothelial pharmacotherapy represents an innovative approach to the treatment of many civilization diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, hepatitis and neurodegenerative diseases. Far-reaching goal of JCET is to become a leading center for innovative pharmacology of endothelial and blood vessels in Europe.

The project is a pioneering initiative in Poland, which wants to bring together environment of professionals from various fields of biomedicine in one common direction - the development of academic ideas for new medicines. It is not possible without modern equipment and consolidation of different professionals- Agnieszka Sito interpreters with the Center for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development (CITTRU) - the Jagiellonian University unit, which was responsible for preparing project documentation and will continue to engage in development process of JCET activities.
