2008-09-25 Baltic Biotechnology and Diagnostics Center - BioBaltica

A joint initiative of the biggest Academies from Gdansk (Poland): Medical Academy, Gdansk University of Technology and Gdansk University with contribution of the Pomeranian Parliament resulted In establishing Baltic Biotechnology and Diagnostics Center - BioBaltica.

Mission of BioBaltica is to create proper conditions enabling high-level R&D of biotechnology and innovative diagnostics. Generous support for research form the Innovative Economy program and objection to young scientists emigration resulted in decision of establishing modern scientific and R&D center.

According to Krzysztof Bielawski, BioBaltica CEO, chances to receive a donation worth of 30 mln EUR are high because “the proposal is written very well and performed by professionals.” There are several partners of this initiative e.g. Gdansk Town Council, and companies from Scandinavia and Germany.. “ There are ongoing conversations with Polpharma and maybe we will interest Bioton “.

BioBaltica center is supposed to work according to golden triangle principle: Science – Industry – Regional government. As such it should create professional and successful structure.

The center should start its activity in 2011. It is supposed to evaluate, conduct and commercialize innovative biotechnological projects. Establishing of spin-off companies will be financed by business angels and venture capitals. The core interests of BioBaltis will be industrial biotechnology and innovative diagnostics.
